Raising the Roof

A fundraiser with Godfrey Johnson

Join us for an unforgettable evening with the sensational pianist Godfrey Johnson. The show is a combination of some of Johnson’s favourite sketches, songs and stories, with special guest stars Caely-Jo Levy, Nicholas McDiarmid, Chris Cameron-Dow and some more surprise guests!

Johnson was nominated for 4 Fleur du Cap awards for VASLAV (best solo performance, best performance in a musical and best musical score). He shared a Fleur du Cap award with Claire Watling for his performance in The Shadow of Brel directed by Geoffrey Hyland.

Every ticket sold will help us tackle much-needed repairs, starting with our theatre roof and continuing through the long list of essential fixes to keep the Playhouse thriving.

Luyolo Siyali is a young Cape Town musician and actor.

After high school he joined The South African Youth Choir and this led to him to share the stage with some of South Africa’s biggest

In 2019 he was cast in X Attack directed by Mandisi Sindo . He is an alumni of The Rainbow Academy.

In 2022 he was invited to perform in Spain with a very popular boy band.

Nicholas McDiarmid began his music journey on his father’s lap and quickly graduated to the piano stool, never looking back. Ultimately, the classics won his heart, though Kate Bush remained a constant inspiration, and his pre-performance nerves could still power a small suburb.

A meeting with Godfrey Johnson over a decade ago lured Nicholas back to the stage, where Godfrey’s guidance helped tame his trembling hands. A passionate admirer of Johnson and a fan of Tori Amos alongside Bartok and Prokofiev, Nicholas has left Bach behind—at least in performance. For Nicholas, the true highlight of any show is the audience, and he’s far more intrigued by their stories than his own.
